Last week I found myself picking weeds in my front yard… one of THE worst things to do… like EVER. It has been raining on and off for the past few weeks here in VA, so in my mind, I am thinking, “If I am going to be picking weeds, I might as well do it when the ground is soft.” I thought it was
When our “roots” are in deep with Christ, there is nothing that can tear us apart from Him.
Someone can try to pull and prod at us, the world can tempt you to live your life in sin, the devil can try to get you to turn away from Christ, but that isn’t going to pull us away from the
There is a parable in Matthew that Jesus uses to speak to his people. It says, “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”
God uses this parable to explain that without a root or a foundation, you will not produce anything that will last, and you will wither away. Think about the flowers. When they grow roots into the ground and get sunlight and water, they produce beautiful flowers that last forever. As soon as someone cuts them from their roots--so that your dad, friend, boyfriend, husband, etc. can surprise you with those beautiful flowers--they die in about a week no matter what you do because they are stripped from their nutrients and roots. Or think about the trees that take years and years to grow, and then they produce wonderful fruit when they get sun and water. It’s near impossible to strip them from their roots. Some have such strong roots that I have seen massive trees facing almost parallel to the ground still intact because of their strong roots. You get where I am going with this…Whether it is with something as little as weeds in your front yard, flowers, trees, or your actual life, you must contain a strong root or the proper foundation to withstand the daily adversities. We must have a strong relationship with God that is not quickly withered by this world.
You see, I did all I can to take the weeds out by the roots and I couldn’t. I tried to do it by cutting it down rather than taking it from the foundation, and it came back renewed and stronger. In life we try so hard to change what is happening around us or change the situation we are in rather than fixing the root of the problem, and that is our foundation with God. I hate to break it to you, but being a Christian doesn’t mean the absence of struggles, it means the absence of fighting these struggles alone. So many things in this life are going to shake us. Satan wants to uproot us from our foundation and he wants us to wither away just as weeds, flowers and trees do without their roots. If we have set the proper foundation, regardless of the conditions or struggles we face, we will be renewed and stronger because our roots are in Him, and therefore, we are not shaken.
So how do we get rooted in Christ? READ THE BIBLE. Get to know the Lord personally. He gave us a sweet love story and instructions on how to live life in the bible. That is how we get to know Christ and learn how we build our foundation and our roots in Him so that no matter what comes our way, we are prepared and not shaken. Become deeply rooted.
