I am really bad at directions. So bad that I cannot get myself around town if I do not have “maps” turned on my iPhone. I set my directions on loud, and I still find myself making U-turns, missing exits, and getting stuck somewhere I am completely unfamiliar with. I have lived in the same area now for about 6 months, and there are days I STILL miss the exit coming home. Why? Because I depend on my phone rather than paying attention to the things around me. And, just like I miss exits when I am driving, there are moments in my relationship with Christ that I just miss it.
Don’t miss where God is leading you because your focus is elsewhere. #dontmiss
I am going to be brutally honest and say that lately, my focus has been primary on me, and very little on Christ. I can always tell when my life lacks Christ because it starts to look a little bit different, and I have a much harder time hearing what God is teaching me. The times that I truly seek God are the times I hear Him the clearest. When I am finding my way around town I can have my phone on the loudest it can go, and because my focus is elsewhere, I don’t hear the direction it is leading me so I miss the exit. Same thing happens in my relationship with Christ. If my focus is elsewhere, I don’t hear the direction He is leading me and I miss it. So what do I do? The bible says if you seek the Lord with all your heart and all your soul you will find Him (Deuteronomy 6:5 & 30:10; Jeremiah 29:13). The more I seek God and turn my focus on Him, the louder His direction is on my life. Don’t miss where God is leading you because your focus is elsewhere.
When my brother was about 8 years old he went with my dad to the Seattle Mariners spring training. While he was there he got to meet and chat with all the players, he toured the baseball facility, went in the locker room with the players, and got to stand on the field during practice. After their practice the coach gave him a pair of used batting gloves to take home with him. When he got home I remember asking him what his favorite part of the trip was. Smiling from ear to ear, he said when he got free batting gloves…WHAT!! After all that he had done with the team, his favorite memory was something they gave him! He was so excited that he was able to have something that his little heart desired that he missed the big picture of the entire trip.
These stories mean nothing but show you how easy it is to miss the important things that God is trying to teach you when you are focused on the wrong things. God says in His word that anyone who hears His words and puts them into practice is like a wise man who builds his house on a rock (Matthew 7:24). How do you expect to put God’s word into practice when you are not reading the word, or you are not listening to God’s voice? It is impossible. I challenge you all to seek God with all of your heart and soul, and really listen to what God is trying to teach you. Don’t miss it!
