Rest. Now-a-days it feels like there is no time to just rest. I know as for my husband and I, we have been non-stop since I can remember, and now we are on the way to California surprising my family. Everything has been a blast, but it has been go, go, go. Now, there is nothing wrong with being busy, but even in the bible, God says to rest.
And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. Mark 6:31
I know in my life, whenever there is free time I find something that ‘needs’ to be done. Whether it is running an errand, cleaning the house, going out and catching up with a friend… ANYTHING. I have a really hard time just relaxing and resting because there is always something to be done. As I was doing my quiet time one morning, I realized the importance of resting in Jesus.
Rest is necessary for our bodies. Without proper rest the human body actually starts to break down. Our body begins to break down in every aspect: physically, emotionally, spiritually. Although resting is important for our body, it is also important for our soul. Think about when you are fully rested, you wake up feeling energized and rejuvenated. Same thing happens when you rest in Christ. Your spirit feels re-energized and rejuvenated.
This is the kind of rest I am talking about: taking our time to grow spiritually, spending time with God, and really resting in His plans. [Tweet “I am talking about taking a break from our busy lives, and focusing on Jesus! “] During this season, the Lord has been giving me a little taste of what it means to truly rest in Him. To feel His presence in the midst of all that is going on in our lives. Jesus is our rest. It says this in Matthew 11:28-29:
“Come to me all who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Think about times you are really busy. Think about the days that you feel like you haven’t sat down for more than 5 minutes, if at all. What is normally the first thing that goes? Well for me, it is time with the Lord. Some of you may be wonderful at starting your day off or finishing your day with the Lord no matter how busy you are, and I really look up to you for that. Others like me, may struggle in that aspect. Sometimes I feel like there is so much to do I don’t have a minute to sit down and spend time with the Lord. I really feel embarrassed saying that, but I am being transparent, and God is teaching me.
Last week we were supposed to get hit by a huge snow storm. They were estimating about 2 inches of snow within a few days, so I was thinking we would probably be stuck in our homes for a few days. I started writing a list of all the things I could do around the house while I was stuck in the snow storm. Laundry, vacuum, deep clean floors…then I stopped. This would be a wonderful time to spend with Christ and rest in Him. It would be a good time to dig deep into His word, focus on my marriage and just rest. Sure, I could get some of the things on my list done, but they can wait.
You may not be stuck in your home because of a snow storm. You may have a ‘to-do list’ that takes up more than one piece of paper, you may be running your kids to different schools, sports or extracurricular activities, you may have work that you feel like never ends, or a test coming up that you feel like you don’t have enough hours in the day to cram in your studying, shoot, you may even be going to teach people about Christ. No matter what your life looks like, no matter how crazy your schedule is, I challenge you these next couple of weeks to push aside the things that can wait, and put your focus and your rest in Jesus. Just see how God works, just see the things that you learn. Let’s go back to the basics, the foundational truths of simply believing in Him, trusting His ways and learning to rest in what He has done and is doing in our lives. If we can rest in what God is doing, we can focus our lives on Him instead of the unknown. In Him, we will get strength for the day. I am praying that during this time of rest, that your spirit feels rested and rejuvenated!
